Covers More Formats.

The two most important things about Canvas Viewer are speed and format coverage.

It is not a single-purpose previewer for just one media type. It is a continuous file viewer for macOS. After you open a folder, you can move through images, videos, audio, text, subtitles, PDFs, and selected Office / iWork / WebArchive / document snapshots with very little interruption. When you open one file directly, Canvas Viewer immediately returns you to that file’s folder context so you can keep going.

In mixed asset folders, downloads folders, delivery folders, and editing material folders, the real value is not only whether one format can open. What matters is that most common files can open quickly, switch quickly, and stay in order without breaking your review flow. That is the core of Canvas Viewer.

Why It Feels More Efficient

Fast: opening folders is fast, opening single files is fast, and moving back and forth inside the current directory is fast.

Broad format support: images, video, audio, text, subtitles, and PDF are covered, and many document-type files can still be previewed as snapshots instead of becoming dead ends.

The sequence stays intact: even when a file is not supported for deep preview, it is not silently skipped.

Actions stay together: view, switch, tag, rename, delete, and copy path from one place as much as possible.

Good Fit For

Quick review of image folders, video folders, and mixed asset folders

Sequential review of media, documents, and notes in folder order

Applying tags, renaming, deleting, and copying paths without leaving the viewer

Browsing subtitled video, Markdown notes, PDFs, and common text formats together

Core Capabilities

Continuous browsing inside the current folder: once a folder is open, you can move forward and backward in one sequence.

Single-file open still returns to folder context: opening one file loads its parent folder and focuses that file.

Thumbnail rail without losing order: supports show / hide, file names, folder entries, and auto-hide behavior.

Media playback and subtitles: supports playback, mute, volume, scrubbing, small / large seek jumps, embedded subtitles, and matching sidecar subtitles.

Text and Markdown reading: common text files can be viewed directly, and Markdown can switch between reading mode and plain text.

Finder-integrated actions: rename, reveal in Finder, copy path, edit Finder tags, and delete the current file directly.

Configurable settings: adjust theme, language, thumbnails, subtitles, default media mute, slideshow, shortcuts, and local cache.

Supported File Types

Images: JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, HEIC, HEIF, TIF, TIFF, BMP, WEBP

Video: MOV, MP4, M4V, plus extended VLCKit-backed support for AVI, MKV, WEBM, WMV, MPEG, TS, VOB, and more

Audio: AAC, AIFF, FLAC, M4A, MP3, WAV, plus extended VLCKit-backed support for OGG, OPUS, WMA, and more

Text and subtitles: TXT, MD, MARKDOWN, CSV, TSV, JSON, XML, YAML, LOG, RTF, HTML, CSS, JS, TS, PY, SQL, SH, INI, TOML, SVG, plus subtitle files such as SRT, ASS, SSA, and VTT

PDF: native PDF preview

Document snapshots: DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, PPTX, Pages, Numbers, Key, WebArchive, and similar files can be shown as system snapshots

Note: not every file type provides the same level of native deep preview. Some formats are shown as system snapshots, and some extended audio/video support comes from VLCKit.

Getting Started

Open a folder: press
Command + O
and choose a folder to begin continuous browsing.

Open a single file: press
Command + Shift + O
; the app will focus that file and load its folder.

Move through files: use
↑

↓

←

→
to browse inside the current directory.

Show or hide the thumbnail rail: use
Command + T
.

Adjust the experience: manage theme, language, thumbnails, subtitles, playback, and cache behavior in Settings.

Common Actions

Show / hide the thumbnail rail:
Command + T

Finder tags: set Finder tags from “Edit Tags” in the numbered menu at the top right

Delete the current file: menu bar
File Actions > Delete…

Copy path / reveal in Finder / rename: all available directly inside the app

Image rotation: supported image files can write a 90-degree rotation back to the original file

Help & FAQ

How is it different from Finder or Quick Look?

Canvas Viewer is not mainly about previewing one file at a time. It is built around moving forward and backward through the current folder. For mixed-format folders, that makes it better suited for continuous review than repeatedly opening and closing Quick Look.

Does it recursively scan subfolders?

No. Browsing stays scoped to the current folder. If there are folders inside it, you can enter them and continue browsing there, but Canvas Viewer does not recursively expand the whole directory tree by default.

What happens if a file cannot be deeply previewed?

It is not silently skipped. Canvas Viewer keeps the file in sequence and shows its system icon and file name, so your review rhythm stays intact.

How do subtitles work?

The app supports embedded subtitle tracks and matching sidecar subtitle files. You can control subtitle on/off, size, and font preset from Settings.

Does it modify my original files?

Normal browsing does not modify source files. Real changes happen only when you explicitly apply Finder tags, rename, delete, or write back a rotation for a supported image.

Can I clear the cache?

Yes. The Local Cache section in Settings lets you inspect usage, clear preview and thumbnail cache, and reset local app state.

System & Languages

System requirement: macOS 14 or later

Interface languages: English, 繁體中文, 日本語

Support & Legal

For support, privacy information, and user-rights information related to App Store distribution, please use the links below.

Support contact: Roobooto K.K., Osaka, Japan, hi@roobooto.jp

Privacy Policy: Canvas Viewer Privacy

User Rights & Copyright Notice: Canvas Viewer User Rights

Additional Notes

Canvas Viewer is designed and published by Roobooto K.K.
